Sabato’s impeccable food styling, recipe development and catering offers a look into both Jessie and Stephanie's unique experiences of life in the Med. In their words Sabato means to them: ‘Classic and comfortable Mediterranean food’.
SABATO OF AMSTERDAM
How was Sabato Amsterdam born?
Our brand was born out of friendship that revolved around a mutual interest in food, aesthetics and grocery shopping. We come from different backgrounds that have a strong link with the Mediterranean lifestyle, so when we started Sabato we could use all of these things to create our style of cooking and presenting food.
What ingredients have you liked playing with this Spring?
Great question! We love so many of the fresh flavours that Spring brings. We like everything fennel related. Leafy greens like turnip tops, cime di rape, argretti can be used for so many dishes. When we see them on markets we have to have them. And of course the Dutch white asparagus are peak Spring to us.
What's your favourite Falcon product and why?
We like clean yet classic aesthetics, so many of the Falcon products tick that box. But we especially like the rectangular flat trays (Small Tray) with a red or black rim. They can be used for snacks but also to beautifully store condiments and such.
How would you say you approach food styling at Sabato?
It always starts from a classic/traditional dish that we want to highlight in a certain way. We choose to accentuate some elements of the dish in a fresh and clean way and this makes the styling look the typical 'Sabato' way.
What do you love most about Amsterdam in the Summer?
What comes to mind first are the elm trees on the canals that start to get green and the blossoms and magnolia's exploding in parks and gardens. Bike rides through the city after cold, rainy and dark days. The changing of produce available on the markets and longer evenings outside on the streets with friends and food and drinks.
Are there any local companies you'd like to shoutabout? Where do you usually eat and drink in your local area?
Bir Tat for the best Turkish home cooking, El Mauri for Moroccan breakfast, CRAdam for French classics, Bella Storia for the best pizza, Cala Iris for fresh fried fish, Serifoglu for baklava and breakfast, de Patatzaak for fries, Tol en de Geus + Stubbe for Dutch herring. Van Dobben for bread rolls and croquets, Cafe De Pels and Benelux bar for a drink, Carmen for a coffee and the vibes, Xi An, Hoi Tin and Sea Palace for Chinese food, Kafenion and Ikaria for Greek food and coffee.
