Can you tell us more about SALT?
When I started my business in 2016, I wanted to make sure I was working from a place of my own inspiration. When I took a moment to focus on what inspired me, it was simple: salt. Salt represents both ocean and earth. It leads to thoughts of home—Salt Spring Island, or, lovingly called Salty. Salt is the root word for my two favourite places on the planet, places that nurture me with calming energy and have become a haven for my heart. Salt is the island and salt is the sea. I want to create a brand that helps everyone to understand the beauty of these two places.
What made you decide to open a shop and start a sustainable fashion line?
I'm not sure that I decided to start a line so much as it evolved. Way back in my teens I started selling graphic tees at local markets. I noticed people shopped because they want the feeling they get from items. As time passed, I saw the power this had to create community. So I set forth to create a brand that builds community and in turn change. As mentioned above, I LOVE THE OCEAN! This means alot of what we do centres around the salty sea and how we can care for it!
You stock Falcon enamelware at SALT. What’s your favourite product and what do you use it for?
I love and use everything from Falcon! I have British roots, so the iconic look of English enamelware makes me feel connected to family. I tell all our customers, enamelware is not just for camping, it's great in the outdoors and the kitchen. We have full sets on our boat and in our home. If I had to choose a favourite item though it would be the prep set. I love how it all nests together, takes up little space, yet is ready for all your snacking needs!
Is there a specific dish that you would make at SALT using any of our Falcon products?
I use the prep set when we host dinners, as there are so many bowls for every dish. I love making rosemary roasted potatoes + crumbles in the baking pans. I'm not sure there is one specific recipe I use with falcon, I'm pretty sure I cook everything in falcon!
Are there any other local companies you'd like to shoutabout? Where do you usually eat, drink, and source ingredients in your local area?
I love local chef Haidee Hart, I find so much inspiration in the way she seasonally cooks! We are lucky to have lots of local, sustainable food options around us. Some of my favourite brands would have to be Salt Spring Jam and Salt Spring Sea Salt among so many delightful local farmers!
How have you been keeping during this time? Do you have any tips for small business owners?
Salt's growing! I'm trying to find the balance in running a growing brand, design company and being a part time momma to twin girls, alongside having a hobby farm. It's safe to say life is busy. I just try to focus on the little moments of joy in my day. Many of them centre around food. I love growing food, and cooking with family in the kitchen and over an open fire!
My one big tip that I have learned in my 17 years of being an entrepreneur is; there is never enough time. You have to create moments for work, home, self care, adventure etc. If you focus too much on one aspect you will lose yourself. So, leave work on time, enjoy the little moments + dream big!
