Life in the Swedish Countryside : Elin Meadows

From her 19th century cottage in the Swedish countryside, Elin Meadows shares the ongoing renovation of her home, seasonal gardening projects and everyday life outdoors.

Can you introduce us to yourself and what you do?

I’m Elin and I live in a 19th century cottage in the southern part of the Swedish countryside, sharing bits of my life over at @elinmeadowss. After living in the city for years, my partner and I decided we wanted a slower life and made the move - now we spend most of our time doing different projects and renovations, slowly restoring our cottage to its former glory while documenting the process along the way.

What do you love about living in Sweden and what inspires you about the landscape?

My favourite thing about Sweden is the seasons, and how we have the most beautiful summers and cold, dark winters. They complement each other perfectly and make you appreciate each one more when it arrives. The rich nature and the shifting seasons inspire me a lot.

You seem to be busy in your garden this season, what are you most excited about growing?

Definitely artichokes! I think they are one of the most beautiful vegetables - they almost look like flowers in the garden - and they taste amazing steamed and eaten with some olive oil and sea salt.

Your cottage is beautifully designed, what was most important to you when creating your home and can you tell us a little about its history?

We always aim to keep the charm and try to preserve it, making changes that feel authentic to the home and its history. To us, this has been the most important part, I think older homes need to be restored slowly and with intention.

One thing I love about older homes is that they carry stories and traces of the people who lived there before. We found out from a local lady in her 70s that when she was a teenager, she and her friends used to work at the surrounding farms during summer, and they would come to the cottage to have their daily “fika” and sit out in the garden. Hearing that the cottage held some of her memories felt so special.

What do you love about Falcon Enamelware and how does it fit into your life?

I love how it is both beautiful and practical, which is perfect for us since we spend so much time outdoors and between the kitchen and the garden, especially during summer. There’s also something timeless and nostalgic about it, which works so well in an older home like ours.

Do you have any exciting plans for the Summer ahead?

This summer I’m most excited about growing our garden and watching it transform throughout the season - harvesting vegetables and cut flowers, and spending as much time as possible outside.
